Distracted driving occurs when a driver’s attention is diverted from the task of driving. It falls into three categories:
- Visual: Taking your eyes off the road
- Manual: Taking your hands off the wheel
- Cognitive: Taking your mind off driving
Some of the most common forms of distraction include:
- Texting or using a smartphone
- Eating or drinking while driving
- Adjusting the radio, GPS, or climate controls
- Talking to passengers
- Reaching for objects in the car
- Personal grooming
